Keeping employees active in the workplace – experiences

and challenges across 5 European countries during the Active Businesses project

The conference

The Active Businesses project aims to create a comprehensive based approach to tackle the issue of health and physical activity (HEPA), using the worksite as the most promising venue of delivery. During the three-year project (2018-2020), the Active Businesses’ has developed and piloted a comprehensive program of activities in Slovenia, UK, Italy, Poland and Turkey, to be easily applied within different working environments in order to improve the health and physical conditions of workers, employees, entrepreneurs and managers.

The final conference of the Active Businesses project will bring together project managers, academics, trainers and educators in the field of sport and education, together with business owners, managers and representatives from various European countries for a half day interactive programme of presentations and active discussions on a range of topics concerning physical activity and health promotion in the workplace and the results of the Active Businesses project.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference will be held online via zoom.

Živa Majcen Rošker

Faculty of sport, Slovenia

Živa Majcen Rošker studied physiotherapy in Ljubljana (Slovenia), completed bachelor’s degree of Sports science at University of Greenwich (England) and got her masters qualifications from University of Dundee (Scotland) where she studied Sports and Biomechanical medicine. She is currently a PhD student at the multidisciplinary program of Biosciences at University of Ljubljana.

Živa is presently working as a researcher at Faculty of sport, University of Ljubljana and lectures Biomechanics and Clinical kinesiology at the Physiotherapy program. She is collaborating with National Olympic Committee as a lecturer for different national license programs. She is frequently publishing her research work in peer reviewed journals and at national and international conferences. Her research work is regularly translated into practice. In a collaboration with Institute of Sport at Faculty of Sport, University of Ljubljana she works with international level athletes on injury prevention, rehabilitation and sports performance enhancement. She also holds her clinical practice where she helps people suffering from musculoskeletal disorders.

Secretary / EU-OSHA Focal Point Manager for Sloveniam Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities of the Republic of Slovenia

Vladka Komel is Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities of the Republic of Slovenia – responsible for coordination of the tasks and activities of the Focal Point of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) since 2003. She is also coordinator of the national OSH awareness raising campaigns and projects.

Director of APGA, Physical Activity Promotion Agency, and Project Coordinator of the Erasmus+ project, Active Businesses.

Graduated from the Faculty of Sport of Ljubljana, he has several years of experience working as a primary school sport teacher, in public administration, and in event and project management. He is an expert in the promotion of health and physical activities in working environments and has worked in programs in the field of social integration and access to equal opportunities for disadvantaged.

Associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Ljubljana, Vice-Dean of Scientific and Research Activities at the Faculty of Sports

Prof. Maja Pajek, Phd, is associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Ljubljana. She is Vice-Dean of Scientific and Research Activities at the Faculty of Sports. She works scientifically and professionally in the field of elite sports and sports for all. Maja Pajek was involved in the Healthy Lifestyle project as an external collaborator and lecturer at the Faculty of Education. As President of the Slovenian Association for Children’s and Youth Sport, she was responsible for various national projects in the field of sport and recreation, which are financed by European social funds. As a project manager and lecturer, she actively participated in the Physical Activity for Health projects. She is a member of the Expert Council of the Slovenian Gymnastics Association. In 2012 she was also a member of the Council of Experts of the Republic of Slovenia for Sport. Since 2018 she has also been a member of the Commission for Accreditation of Training Programs in the field of sport of the Republic of Slovenia. She regularly publishes her research and professional works in foreign and domestic publications and at various scientific and professional conferences in Slovenia and abroad. She is the editor-in-chief of the Science of Gymnastics Journal, which has been published since 2009. The Science of Gymnastics Journal is the first and only scientific journal in the field of gymnastics and shows its uniqueness by being one of the most renowned scientific journals in the world. She participates in professional and scientific congresses in various roles: as chair of the scientific committee, as chair of the program council, in various organizing committees and as an invited lecturer.

Prof. Dr. Faik Ardahan graduated from Erciyes University, Institute of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Production Management and Marketing Department in 1987.  He completed his master’s degree in Erciyes University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Production Management and Marketing in 1992. Between 1997-2003, he completed his doctorate on Production Management and Marketing at Selcuk University Institute of Social Sciences.  His master thesis was on a method proposal for the creation of a production cell in Group technology, and his doctoral thesis was on the Franchising in Tourism and the Turkish House Pensions Franchising Model proposal and application. He has good level  of English.  He is currently doing research in the fields of Social and Humanities Recreation, Sports Sciences Basic Field, Sport Sciences,Hospitality,Leisure,Sport and Tourism. Prof. Dr. Faik Ardahan has articles published in various journals and papers published in books.

Rosina Ulokamma Ndukwe

Rosina Ulokamma Ndukwe

Adult Unit Coordinator at CESIE, Italy

Rosina Ulokamma Ndukwe is Adult Unit Coordinator at CESIE, a European centre of studies and initiatives based in Palermo, Italy. With extensive experience in project management, project design and strategy, Rosina has developed and gained more than 15 years’ experience and knowledge of the non-profit sector and European funded programmes by managing the implementation and delivery of transnational projects in the United Kingdom and Italy and leading the governance and strategic development of local charities. Rosina has excellent experience of capacity building of marginalised communities and supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds to access education and training opportunities, including racial minority communities, NEETs and women. As Coordinator of the Adult Unit, Rosina is leading the management of a portfolio of more than 25 Erasmus+ projects – KA2 Strategic Partnerships in the field of Adult Education, KA3, Sport Collaborative Partnerships, Sector Skills and Knowledge Alliance. 

The COVID-19 pandemic has left an undeniable impact on the working environment. For many of us, our homes have become our places of work, social environments and a hub for physical activity. How can we engage employees in physical activity during the Covid era? After leading the delivery of the Physical Activity Programme across different companies in Palermo, Rosina discusses what can we learn from the Active Businesses project that can help us to adjust to the new ways of the working environment whilst staying active and healthy.
